Every week, our crews collect recyclable materials from households across the borough. Keeping these materials separate from general waste means they can be recovered and recycled, reducing the amount of waste sent for disposal and helping to reduce the need for new raw materials.
From collection to recycling
Our specialist recycling vehicles are designed with two separate compartments, allowing both bins to be emptied during the same collection while keeping the materials separate. This enables our crews to collect different types of recycling efficiently in a single visit, providing a straightforward and reliable service for households across the borough.
Once collected, recycling is brought to our Materials Recovery Facility in Ellesmere Port, where approximately 35,000 tonnes of material are processed each year. Here, materials are sorted and prepared for onward reprocessing before being sent to specialist facilities where they can be used to produce new materials and products.
Maintaining the quality of recycling throughout this process is important. Keeping materials separated helps us recover as much as possible and ensures they are suitable for onward recycling.
Why recycling matters
The products and materials we use every day require natural resources, energy and water to produce. Recycling gives many of these materials another use, reducing the need to continually rely on new resources and helping to reduce the environmental impact of the waste we produce.
Alongside reducing waste in the first place and reusing items wherever possible, recycling is an important part of managing the borough’s waste responsibly. It helps conserve resources, reduces the amount of waste requiring disposal and contributes to the wider environmental ambitions of Cheshire West and Chester.
Successful recycling is a shared effort. From residents separating their recycling at home, to our crews collecting it and our teams processing the materials, each stage plays an important part in ensuring as much as possible can go on to be recycled.
Working together to recycle more
CWR works closely with Cheshire West and Chester Council to provide an efficient and reliable recycling service and to support efforts to reduce waste and increase recycling across the borough.
Residents can play their part by reducing waste where possible, reusing items and making use of the recycling services available across Cheshire West and Chester.
